De Larguetas y Marconas
Reinventing Móstoles Center
Móstoles, Spain, 2015
This project proposes a process that brings together neighbors, municipality, professionals and companies in an organic manner to reinvent the Central Area of Móstoles, based on the direct involvement of neighboring communities from day one. The project is based on 3 core ideas: collective value of urban interventions; a feedback process between citizens and the administration with a professional mediator; and an open-ended development, where the long-term evolution and outcomes of each action is considered.
The implementation of the project will be organized in 5 actions related to future developments already planned by the city and which will take place in the span of 10 years. The first two actions refer to the adoption of empty lots for young businesses and artists as a way to increase the productive potential of the area. The next two steps will bring up to energy and accessibility standards current residential buildings. After these structural changes have been realized, the fifth step ensures that the future developments can be implemented in a way in which current residents and workers are safe from gentrification, and a new symbiotic relation can be formed between them and the new developments that will be brought to the area.
