Hygieia-sur-Houyoux
Europan 14
Huy, Belgium, 2017
Hygieia-sur-Hoyoux offers a solid and balanced solution that responds to the growth of the city and the necessity of creating new jobs. The project capitalizes in the Hospital and its associated economic activities as a gravitational point to atract new generations, consolidate urban growth and reappropiate neglected sites (buildings) inherited from an industrial past. Hygieia-sur-Hoyoux will displace the gravitational point of the city to the site and reaffirm Sainte Catherine as the southern entry to Huy.
Programmatic Hybrid
The project revisits the areas of “health” as an economic power that are not resolved in the traditional hospital typology. Wellness Centers, new spaces for practitioners, co-working spaces, commerce, research, medical supplies, healing spaces, outdoor activities’ infrastructures, classrooms, convention spaces… they all constitute programs that this new industry relies on. The program of the new activity will come together with spaces for the citizens of Huy that are in need of housing and the newcomers that will gravitate towards this new economy. Social Hybrid
In the design of the new urban hybrid, the hierarchy of the parts and the capacity for growth and change, owes much to the city as a paradigm. The proposal expands and supports the basic programs for the existing hospital (wellness center, classrooms, medical offices, research spaces) and provides the residents with new spaces for social interaction. In doing so, the site will attract a diverse community of professionals (both local and incoming), younger generation, patients, elderly and visitors. This crosspollination of communities and different social structures will produce a healthier richer future for Huy.
