¡No le pongas puertas al campo!
Europan 14
Torrelavega, Spain, 2017
Our proposal for Europan 14 recognises the need to explore the lines or boundaries between city and productive activity, with the aim of understanding the relationship between productive activities and the urban and social fabric that generates. To begin with, we propose a historic insight into the role that these limits have played in the physical, social and economic evolution of Torrelavega throughout three different productive periods:1.The Mercantile City, 2.The Industrial City and 3.The Service City. From this, we learn lessons applicable to the Contemporary Productive City.
One of the most prominent characteristics of Torrelavega Cattle Market is precisely how several urban boundaries restrict the relationship between the market’s precinct and its urban context, thus limiting the connection between productive activity and urban fabric. Our proposal defines a series of actions that are applied to these boundaries with the aim of creating a greater symbiosis between city and production. Some of our proposed actions on boundaries are: Breaking, Thickening, Filtering, Activating, Connecting or Revealing. Each of the Existing Limits is subject to several of these actions, thus defining a number of possible interventions. The ultimately goal of these interventions is to blur, activate or even to delete the line that mediates between 'city' and 'production'.
